Back-breaking work, packing things up, hauling it up from the basement, staging in the living room, reorganizing and packing some more, then staging again on the back porch, and finally out to the parking lot. Basically trying to minimize the time spent with the back door open and outside in the heat and humidity. Then the 10 to 15-minute drive one exit down I-84. At least at the house it was a little easier, since I could back right up to the garage. The Thule box was an important part of this process, so I couldn't pull right into the garage. Again trying to minimize my 'stay time' in the great outdoors, moving everything into garage first then closing the garage door. Hooray attached garage!
Another mini-drama was trying to sell the two window AC units I purchased two summers ago when we first moved to CT. Essentially brand new since we only used them that summer, then took them out and they sat in the basement the last year and a half while I was traveling -- Katie wasn't going to attempt to put them in and didn't really need/want the extra cooling. But I only got a quarter what I paid for them. And getting people to live up to their word on when they would actually show up wasn't disappointing. Anyways, someone finally came for the last one just as the movers were leaving. And I still had to finish cleaning the apartment.
Friday was Katie's day off and the day the movers came. Apparently they almost didn't come, that would have been a true disaster. As it was, the only 'disaster' was the amount of stuff in the kitchen that still had to be packed up on Friday morning. That's where Katie's mom really helped out. She showed up at 10 am and by the time the movers were there had a half dozen boxes for them to haul away along with the furniture. The movers worked for six hours I think, did a great job. Only some minor damage to my beloved "L" shaped desk, which I was able to repair (It's really too big to fit through doorways).
Saturday and some more family help arrived in the form of my Dad and Bonnie. They brought another desk, this one for Katie. Nice for her to have an actual desk instead of the kitchen table. We designated one of the spare bedrooms as an office.
Dad also helped me pick out a lawnmower. Erring on the side of American built, green, riding mowers: I got a John Deere. Its the smallest, cheapest riding mower they make, but at least it's a Deere!
Dad and Bonnie stayed overnight, and left Sunday morning before Katie got up (which isn't hard, even though its her 'early' day). Katie went to work and on this seventh day -- I rested. Until about 6pm when I went for a run, pulled some weeds, watered the plants in the front yard, and then went back to work unpacking and organizing the house. It's almost there: bedrooms, office, kitchen, downstairs. Then we have the great, empty room upstairs. Just a rug and a couple small tables. Furnishing that will be a project for later this fall.
Now a long week of finishing up here with the house and getting ready for school. Books, clothes, and some more paperwork I think!
