Week #35 - Doldrums

That word just came to me. But that's kind of how it feels right now. Like the scene from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Land's End. Eventually they turn the ship upside-down to get out of it. Hopefully it won't come to that around here, but it wouldn't hurt if we rocked the boat a little to break up the monotony.

Perhaps the most eventful thing that happened this week was calling Katie on Friday to wish her happy Military Spouse Appreciation Day and calling Mom and Grandma early Sunday my time to wish them a happy Mother's Day. I hadn't called Mom in a while, mostly because of the time difference, its a pain the butt to get through sometimes, and she and Grandma are always out and about leading what appears to more active lives than me!

Well, the Commodore saw me out here typing and just brought me a naval message from Destroyer Squadron FIFTY. The subject says just "BRAVO ZULU to CTG 56.5", which is our command. It talks about how well things went up there at the OPLATs, especially with out boat det training the Iraqis.

Earlier this week the Commodore came back from observing this training and brought down a video they put together. I finally got to see it later in the week when it was shown to an Admiral who was here for a visit. Top Gun theme, music and all. Those guys still look like they are having way to much fun.

I also got to get off base because of the Admiral's visit. It was RDML Messerschmidt, who is command of the Navy Reserve Force Command. We had been meaning to do a Naval Academy alumni photo for some time. Now that all the USNA grads were back in Kuwait, this visit from the Admiral, also a grad, was the opportune time. We went up to the port and took the photo on the end of the pier. As usual, I got to stand in the back and become a "floating head." Even worse, we were on the end of a floating pier, and by the time we all got in there the end of the pier was about three feet lower than the middle where the photographer was.

That's it for now. Like I said, its the doldrums. About seven weeks to go. Maybe something more interesting will happen next week.
