This weekend was the end of the first full week with all hands onboard. So it was a very busy week. On average, I left work at 9pm and one night was there until 11pm. It didn't go unnoticed, but at the same time we're still not quite there yet in my department. Hard to believe so many things have been left undone going into this deployment. But at the same time its hard to believe we got everyone here safely. Well, everyone except for those who didn't make it through NMPS for whatever reason. Manpower, or tracking everyone, is just one of my many responsibilities.
Anyways, at the end of afor-mentioned long week I went to a couple of ceremonies. The first was a promotion ceremony for my former Commanding Officer at Third Fleet JFACC. I managed to get out of work for about three hours to attend the ceremony up at Point Loma. It was a nice affair. Short speaches by promoter and promotee, new Admiral shoulderboards, and on to the food and beverages. I socialized with all my old shipmates at C3F JFACC, congratulated my former CO, then grabbed as many leftover cookies as I could hold and brought them back to my sailors in Imperial Beach for their hard work. I know they were still there, having spent the whole day providing customer service to the command.
Even though I was there late again on Friday, I got out early enough to go catch the end of the San Diego Hash House Harriers run out in Spring Valley. Saw a few old friends, had some more great food, then went home and crashed pretty hard.
Woke up to another beautiful day on Saturday, which turned into a long day of mandatory fun. Fun because it was a combined Family Day, dual change of command ceremony, and concurrent 'fiesta' being put on by relatives and friends of one of the officers. Mandatory because I'm in charge of correspondence and awards (among other things) and I had to bring over the 'end of tour' awards, one of which still had to be signed by the Commodore before the change of command. Also, since the Squadron couldn't find the command camera, I obligated myself to bring mine and take photos. Which you see above and below.
At least a couple of my sailors were also there volunteering. One of them is leading the color guard, another was also taking photos with another officer's camera. The officer who is responsible for the command camera. Guess that was his way of trying to make up for it :)
Just finished watching the Giants deplorable performance on Monday Night Football. Rough week for all us New Yorkers! At least this week seems to be off to a better start at work. Lots of room for improvement, but we're making progress getting organized and working together.
Just got off the phone with Katie. We had hoped to go skiing over Thanksgiving but things just don't seem to be lining up. We were going to try to get up to Mammoth, or rendezvous in Park City. But now the plan is she will just fly out here and we'll relax in San Diego for a few days. I leave for Kuwait right after. I also have to squeeze in the Professional in Human Resources certification exam that Monday. On that note, today should be the week I find out about my active duty application. Wish me luck! I can't get enough of this!!
